Voltron, specifically as featured in "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," is a giant robot formed by the combination of five smaller robotic lions. This version of the character first appeared in the animated television series of the same name in 1984, adapted from the Japanese anime series "Beast King GoLion."
In the "Voltron" series, five space explorers, Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk, and Sven (later replaced by Allura), pilot the individual lions. These lions, each with unique weapons and abilities, are designed to combine to form Voltron. Voltron's primary weapon is a blazing sword.
Voltron is the last line of defense for the planet Arus and the entire universe against the evil forces of King Zarkon and the Drule Empire. The five pilots work as a team and are responsible for the safety of the inhabitants.
